Concussion
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by direct trauma to the head, such as from falling, getting hit or being in an accident. They can also occur as a result of rapid acceleration-deceleration of the head and brain, such as in whiplash injuries. This sudden movement can stretch and bruise nerves, blood vessels and brain cells, causing chemical changes in your brain that lead to temporary loss of normal brain function.
Common symptoms of a concussion include:
Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Confusion
Balance problems/dizziness/lightheadedness
Visual disturbances
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Sensitivity to light and noise
Memory loss/forgetfulness
Feeling tired or drowsy
Changes in sleep patterns
Trouble understanding and/or concentrating
Depression
Being irritable, nervous, and anxious
Feelings of being “just not right” or in a "fog”
