The Vestibular System & Vestibular Disorders
The vestibular system is a sensory system that includes the peripheral vestibular system (the inner ear and the pathway to the brain) and the central vestibular system (the brain). It is responsible for providing our brain with information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. It helps to keep our vision in focus by coordinating eye movements, and it contributes to motor functions that allow us to maintain our balance, stabilize our head and body during movement, and maintain our posture.
Vestibular problems can result from a number of causes, including inner ear issues and infections, head trauma, brain-related issues, diseases, medication and more. Problems in any part of this complex sensory system can result in symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness and visual issues that can lead to associated nausea/vomiting, headaches, fatigue and poor concentration.
